In order to create his "works of art"--that is, his students--he would arrange for assassins that he himself trained to try to kill his students. He thought that the hatred his students felt for him was a necessary element in making them grow, and his final goal was to sacrifice himself so that he could perfect his works of art. He played with many lives for his own entertainment and ended up being targeted by the Black Dragon Knights because of it, but it is unclear what happened to him in the end.
